Joe R. Lansdale

 

Joe R. Lansdale, geboren 1951 in Gladewater, Texas, wuchs auf in einfachen Verhältnissen. Während des Studiums in Austin und Nacogdoches schlägt er sich mit unterschiedlichsten Jobs durch. Er ist aktiver Gegner des Vietnamkrieges und kann sich durch ein ärztliches Attest seiner Einberufung entziehen.

Seit 1981 ist Lansdale hauptberuflicher Schriftsteller. Im gleichen Jahr wird sein erster Roman »Act of Love« veröffentlicht. Lansdale schreibt in der Folge massenhaft Horror-, Splatter- und Western-Stories, die mit diversen Preisen ausgezeichnet werden.

1992 erscheint Lansdales erster Roman mit dem Ermittlerduo Hap Collins und Leonard Pine. Ursprünglich nicht als Serie konzipiert, werden der schwarze Schwule Leonard Pine und der weiße Hetero Hap Collins zu einem der ungewöhnlichsten Ermittler-Teams in der Kriminalliteratur. Eher tolerant-liberaler Gesinnung, scheuen sich Collins und Pine nicht, Gewalt als Mittel einzusetzen und auch mal über die Grenzen der Selbstjustiz zu hopsen.

Joe R. Lansdale macht seit 30 Jahren Kampfsport und unterrichtet täglich in seiner eigenen Schule. Er lebt in Nacogdoches, Texas.

(1) Eher eine Novella als ein Roman. Die Story spielt im Jahre 1929 und hat gewisse Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Roman »The Bottoms«, der zwei Jahre später erschien.

(2) Eine historische Novella, spielt in Galveston im Jahre 1900, ein paar Tage vor einem verheerenden Tornado. Urpsrünglich nur eine Short-Story, 1997 entstanden, die Lansdale für die Buchausgabe überarbeitet und zu einer Short-Novel ausgeweitet hat.

(3) Ein früher Lansdale-Roman. Das Buch enthält die Original-Novella und das Script zu Don Coscarellis Film.

(4) Eine science fantasy novella, die erstmals im Doppelband mit Michael Moorcocks Text »Sojan the Swordsman« publiziert wurde.

Die Angaben zu der Stone M.I.A.-Hunter-Reihe sind wackelig. Es handelt sich um eine Heftreihe, die von einem Soldaten erzählt, der in Rambo-Manier in Vietnam gefangene GI's befreit. Insgesamt sind ein knappes Dutzend Hefte entstanden, und manche Bibliographien schreiben alle Hefte Joe R. Lansdale zu. Wir haben nur für die drei oben genannten Titel Hinweise darauf gefunden, dass Lansdale die Autorschaft zuzuschreiben ist. Hinter »Jack Buchanan« scheinen sich mehrere Autoren zu verbergen. Lansdale selbst erwähnt die Texte auf seiner Homepage unter www.joerlansdale.com überhaupt nicht.
