M. J. Trow

Meirion James Trow wurde 1949 in Ferndale, Wales, geboren und ist von Beruf Geschichtslehrer. Seine Serienfigur Inspector Sholto Joseph Lestrade ist nicht Trows Erfindung - sie stammt aus den Sherlock Holmes Romanen, wo er bereits den häufig abfällig belächelten Polizisten gab, der ganz im Schatten des bekannten Privatdetektiven stand. Trow lässt die "historische" Figur nicht einfach neue Abenteuer erleben, sondern erzählt teilweise alte Holmes-Fälle aus Lestrades Perspektive neu. Und dabei kommt der Polizist erheblich besser weg - auf Kosten des koksenden Meisterdetektivs. Doch auch bei M.J. Trow ist Lestrade kein Superheld, sondern mit einer Tolpatschigkeit ausgestattet, die der Autor bis zum Slapstick ausreizt: wenn der wackere Polizist z.B. beim Abschiedswinken ins Wasser fällt.

Trows Romane verfolgen den Weg des Inpsectors, der schließlich zum Superintendent aufsteigt, über gut drei Jahrzehnte. Auf seinem Weg kommt Lestrade nicht nur mit diversen zeitgenössischen Berühmtheiten in Kontakt - Kaiser Wilhelm II, Winston Churchill, reihenweise britisches Blaublut -, sondern auch mit manch williger Dame.

Abgesehen vom ersten Lestrade-Buch, das 1985 im New Yorker Verlag Stein and Day erschienen ist, wurden die Romane in den USA nicht verlegt - bis Ende der 90er Jahre, als sich das erzkonservative Verlagshaus Regnery Publishing, publizistische Heimat der amerikanischen Rechtsausleger, der Bücher annahm.

Neben einigen historischen und True-Crime-Sachbüchern hat M.J. Trow noch eine andere Krimireihe geschrieben: Hauptfigur der zeitgenössischen Serie ist der englische Geschichtslehrer und Amateurdetektiv Peter "Mad Max" Maxwell.
