Der Arthur Ellis Award wird vergeben von den Crime Writers of Canada. Prämiert werden die besten Arbeiten in mittlerweile sechs Kategorien. Ausgezeichnet werden Autoren gleich welcher Nationalität, die in Kanada leben (wie der gebürtige Engländer Peter Robinson etwa), und Autoren mit kanadischer Nationalität, die im Ausland leben - die Kanadierin Michelle Spring z.B., die seit langen Jahren im englischen Oxford lebt. Das Nachsehen haben allerdings die Franco-Kanadier: In der fast zwanzigjährigen Geschichte wurde noch kein einziger französischsprachiger Text ausgezeichnet. Seit dem Jahr 2000 gibt's daher die Rubrik »Best Crime Work in French Language«, ein, wie es scheint, leicht peinliches Feigenblatt: Den Stellenwert dieser Kategorie kann man auch daran erkennen, dass sie auf der Homepage der Crime Writers of Canada erst ganz, ganz unten Erwähnung findet - direkt über den Manuskripten, die keinen Verleger gefunden haben.
Der Name des Preises - da beweisen die Kanadier Humor - ist keine Referenz an einen großen Kriminalautor: Arthur Ellis war ein bekannter Henker in Kanada, in den 20er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts. Der Derrick Murdoch Award ist eine Auszeichnung für das Lebenswerk. Neu hinzugekommen ist im Jahr 2014 der Grandmaster-Award, der alle zwei Jahre im Wechsel mit dem Derrick Murdoch Award verliehen wird: Der Grandmaster-Award ist Krimi-Schriftstellern vorbehalten, mit dem Derrick Murdoch Award hingegen werden nicht nur Autoren ausgzeichnet, sondern allgemein Personen, die sich um die kanadische Kriminalliteratur verdient gemacht haben.
