Der Agatha Award wird seit 1988 von der Malice Domestic Ltd. vergeben. Geehrt werden Autoren und Autorinnen, die "klassische Kriminalromane" schreiben, für die die Romane Agatha Christies exemplarisch sind. Laut Malice Domestic lasse sich das Genre des klassischen Kriminalromans mit mehreren Kriterien definieren: Die Werke enthalten keinen expliziten Sex, sie feiern keine Blutrausch- oder Gewaltorgien, sie haben meistens - aber nicht ausschließlich - einen Amateurdetektiven zur Hauptfigur, der Schauplatz ist eng umrissen (etwa ein Landsitz, eine Insel usw.) und die handelnden Figuren kennen sich untereinander.
Der Agatha-Award wird im Mai auf der »Malice Domestic Convention« vergeben, die in Washington DC oder näherer Umgebung stattfindet. Wir haben uns auf die Kategorien »Bester Roman«, »Bester Debütroman« und die »Auszeichnung für das Lebenswerk« beschränkt. Weitere Preise gibt es in den Kategorien »Nonfiction«, »Best Short Story« und - seit kurzem - »Children«.
Die Gewinner in allen Kategorien und alle Nominierungen finden Sie unter http://malicedomestic.org/agatha-awards.html. Die Preisträger sind nicht automatisch die an erster Stelle genannten, sondern die mit einem schwarzen Sternchen gekennzeichneten Werke.
Die Preise, die im Mai vergeben werden, ehren - soweit es sich um Texte handelt - die Werke des jeweiligen Vorjahres. Darauf beziehen sich auch unsere Jahreszahlen: Rhys Bowen z.B. wurde im Mai 2002 für ihren Roman »Murphy's Law« ausgezeichnet, der 2001 erschienen ist. In unserer Liste hat Rhys Bowen entsprechend den Agatha Award 2001 bekommen. In manch anderen Listen hingegen wird sie als Preisträgerin des Jahres 2002 geführt.
