Der Macavity Award wird von einer Organisation namens »Mystery Readers International« vergeben, deren Mitglieder einmal im Jahr in vier untertschiedlichen Kategorien für ihren Lieblingskrimi stimmen dürfen. Der Preis wird also nicht von einer Jury vergeben, sondern ist gewissermaßen ein Publikumspreis. Vergeben wird die Auszeichnung auf der »Bouchercon«, dem wohl größten Krimifestival der Welt, das jährlich im Oktober immer einer anderen Stadt der USA - bis auf bisher zwei Ausnahmen - stattfindet.
Benannt ist der Preis nach einer kriminellen Katze in einem Gedicht von T.S. Eliot, die ihren Häschern von Scotland Yard immer wieder entkommt. A. L. Webber hat das Gedicht für das Musical »Cats« vertont.
